Number 1 can work for your application D1! Because the overall system will still make more power over stock. The trouble is high RPM is going to suffer, which the camshafts you have are designed to operated. Short and sweet is one of the following two options:

1.) Select a different camshaft specifically aimed at hill climb / track driving

2.) Keep the camshaft and optimize gearing and the exhaust system for it, option #3 is the only option to maintain your torque curve.

We're in process of setting up a formal survey right now. Link to follow :-)

Cheers

choice of another camshaft have been through my mind as it would allow me for more fine tuning with the cams, as setup i have would have a problem with valve/piston clearance if the cams aren't tuned properly...

Wait, I've read the options again and for some whack reason, I missed option 3 . . . Embarrassed

To me, a better torque curve all round is better rather than to chase power higher up the rpm range, thats why we have Vtec . . .

I use the car daily (mostly) and this sounds good!

Good to hear your views there Aavi, the aggressive cam profile during VTEC makes power but also requires good exhaust gas extraction or power will fall flat on its face.

For daily driving #3 is an excellent choice.

Thanks for the survey responses so far! It's been damn good information collection!

Those camshafts with current piston to valve clearance - especially the ramp on those - are a bit risky to the setup but at the same time, dialing them in properly and manufacturing an exhaust to capitalize on the camshaft timing would definitely yield excellent results.

Before you go selling stuff / replacing, think about it - maybe option 3 is closer to your requirements than you think :-)

Some interesting results so far!

Exhaust specifics:
===

50% of you guys prefer Stainless Steel headers, with 62.5% of you preferring the rest of the system to be stainless too.
75% of you would spend between 3,000 and 5,000 on a good header.
50% of you would spend between 3,000 and 4,000 on the rest of the system.
50% of you prefer a screamer of an exhaust, no low tones.
75% of you prefer track day exhaust system setups, not full out power setups at the cost of torque.

Upgrade specifics:
===

62.5% of you don't have Camshaft upgrades
50% of you don't have ECU upgrades
62.5% already have an exhaust setup but most likely not happy with it
50% of you already have an exhaust header that isn't working for you
62.5% of you have made changes to the intake system
25% of you are running larger injectors
87.5% of you have not touched your compression ratio at all
25% of you have had professional work carried out on the cylinder head.
50% of you are running lowered suspension setups

And the shocking one: ONLY 37.5% of you who have carried out the above modifications have had the car professionally tuned.

Interesting survey so far!

Right guys, we're looking for a Toyota 4AGE or similar platform to start R&D for the Toyota brand. If you know of anyone in the market for a performance header and exhaust system, please send them my way.

Thank you.
