Rob, only you!
I agree with fuji whole heartidly, if the car has a lick of factory paint and you don't really have a colour that shows up fine scratches, then sure high pressure washes / car washes is okay.
If resprayed definitely stay away - different hardner mixes and different scratch resistant properties in some paints.
The bucket approach and a soft chamois (not sure on spelling) is the way to go - just make sure you're continiously cleaning the bucket out. Grit particles and a great finish don't go well.
If some damages are already present and you're looking to re-introduce that silky exterior feel, get stuck in with a clay bar. It's a long process but you will really feel and see the difference if you do it properly.
Lastly, never forget to wax after you polish, during the polishing process you expose the vehicle to further damage both scrath resistance wise and weathering wise if you forget to apply a new coat of quality carnauba wax.
