non-turbo = never ending lag

« on: May 30, 2009, 04:39:32 AM »

Hi, I'm new here wasn't to sure where to post this. I currently drive a 1987 Mazda 323 here in NZ. I used to live in SA a few years back. I'm wanting to do a FE3 convertion on my car, but here in New Zealand there isn't much info on these convertions as no one has done one here yet. I only have a little info on these. What i want to know is what gearboxes do you use and drive shafts would work without much modifications?

hi, welcome to the forum, can you get hold of the motor only,if you need a gearbox, you can use the mazda 626 2.0 boxes, either 8v,or 12v,also the ford F6 box will fit, if you use the flywheel and the adapter plate they all fit without any mods, the 626 shafts are also the right size for the 323.post a few pics of your car so we can see if its the same as our model, the body shape is called a P3.

Oh its the same model just a pre-facelift and the only diffirence between this one and teh SA one is the 4 bolt tophats on the struts, The car used to be a 1.3L (E3 engine no) then i changed to a B6 carb motor and now the FE3N. I'm gonna use the b6t mount,fe3 bracket and B6T cradle and a custom front gearbox mount. BP ECU and Loom Tongue

Also could someone give me the power ratings for the High compression FE3 and the low compression one please.

dont worry about the headlights they are the 1985-1987 BFMR headlights

I'm wanting to do a FE3 convertion on my car, but here in New Zealand there isn't much info on these convertions as no one has done one here yet.

Not true Smiley NZ folks like Fred (runs an open source efi forum) has done it before and currently a resident of the UK, destined back to your country very soon.

There a B2200's and UTE's kitted with FE's - you just need to belong to the correct circles to find them.

The engine isn't an FE3N either, FE3N is a code for one type of cam variation the motor shipped with, the motor you have is FE DOHC 2.0 16v Smiley

Power ratings for the 10.0:1 is 108.7kW@6000rpm at the flywheel.

You've gone a similar route to myself, I started with a 57kW (at the fly) 1300 carb. The 323 Chassis now sports a FE DOHC tuned by our company (Toyama Racing Spirit). You'll need new side mounts (the cam gear side), you'll need a new cross member if you don't have the 160i one already. This depends on the gearbox you selected though.

Can you guys still get that bumper you showing there? If so I want to see the back and may want both shipped to this country. Let me know via Private Message.

Do some more searching in this area and you'll come up with loads of information to further your quest, check my build up too for some do's and dont's.

Regards,
Ijin.

sweet thx man, yeah i recently came up with the stuff needed to fit the FE3 without much hassle. Not many people have done it here thb just because of the mounts problem I'm yet to see one. The BPT and B6T convertions are so easy to do and u dont need to mod much to get the BPT in. They just dont have enough power for what i'm looking for.

i'll give you a pm about the bumpers Tongue

al FE engine model type gearboxed will fit, from the 323 1.6 to the 323 2.0, and the old 626 1.8 gearbox will also fit.

sorry for double post :S, one question about the crossmembers when i changed over my motor from the E3 to B6 i never changed the crossmember i just used the b6 Mounts out of a 1991 Mazda 323 Wagon, and all the mounts are pretty much the same. Not sure what the diffirences are between the SA crossmembers and the NZ/AUS/JAP ones. Maybe someone can show me a picture so i can see the diffirences?

here is a picture of my one:

sorry the mounts are still in there gets dark too quickly in the winter here and i dont like working in the dark as much haha Sad

If there are diesel 323's there, try to find one. The RF block they have is basically the same as FE.

the crossmember in the pic is basically the same except the front, cause on the 2.0 the front goes a little wider cause it uses a biger front g/b mounting that has 4 bolts instead of 2

I've had a look, Bojangles is correct, 4 bolt for 2.0 cross member and 2 bolt is the one you have. Get yourself a 4 bolt cross member and you'll be fine up front. Rear mounting point looks perfect Smiley

haha sweet, i dont think i can get one here in NZ if i do i'll be really lucky i'll just get my dad to make me one at his work.

one question the FE3 comes in two forms, low and high compression

the low compression one with dished pistons have 140HP?
and the High compression with domed pistons have 170HP? this is the factory specs i'm talking about.

I wanna know because i'm gonna turbo and aming for atleast 15psi

Now, that's a somewhat complicated issue. One thing's for sure though; there never was a 170hp engine, that was a myth. There was a 165hp version for the final GV facelift though, but it is extremely rare. There are three other versions. They can be recognized from the cam shafts; the high compression one is fitted with FE5A cams (it says so on the cam Smiley) and the low compression is FE3N. Then there is a set of FEAP and FE3N cams. That's a low output slug.

The combustion chamber design is quite sophisticated, but I suggest using very good fuel if you're going to boost the stock engine over 15psi Smiley

If you get part codes on those items let us know, I need to get the EFI tank, mine is still carb, no reserve pickup when taking corners Wink If the fuel line dia. is way different I'll possibly change them too.

PS: The front and rear bumper we chatted about, if you can get those in NZ still - pop me a pm, I'll give you address details so we can calculate total cost + shipping.

Cheers for now.

sorry guys, i have gone a different route with my car. I had to change the type of motor i'm using as i only have a sertian amount of time to finish it. I coulnt find a FE3 in the time i have been working on my car. So instead a friend of mine got me a Mazda 1800cc BP motor. My dad will be doing a cam grind and i will also get some Mazda 323 GTR rods and Acl Pistons. Then turboing it after in a few weeks. It all depents if i can get a link V5 ecu and EVO injectors for a reasonable price.

For not NA is the way to go Cheesy

B6T Cradle will be getting B6T alternator tomorrow.

Dont worry i'm still going for a FE3 but not in the Hatch anymore its going into a 323 Wagon Tongue
