Im thinking of removing my viscus fan and in stalling a electic fan from a volvo it pulls about 30amp on start up .Ithink it should work well it big enough im not running a turbo so the fan shouldnt have a problem cooling . i ran the celica on the dyno figures were not great but what can you expect from an old car  . Im not preparded to change motors as this means altering the body .whatare your views on viscus vers elecrtic.

Hey Banshee,

First off is the Viscous fan giving issues? Are you hoping to make more kW on the wheels going electric?

I've seen that a viscous aka mechanical fan can suck up atleast 10kW. Electronic fans don't put this kind of load on the vehicle, be surprised if they take even 70watts off of the alternator when running (not a fact, heresay).

I am running an electric fan from a opel astra on my FE DOHC and it moves enough CFM to keep things cool.

My biggest worry with electric vs. mechanical is if the electric loses its power for some reason. You can't just drive slow to get home, even at idle you'll eventually reach a very high temperature.

My work around for this would be a sensor on the fan, should voltage drop below operating specs a buzzer or similar light would warn the driver.

Kind of a check engine light but for a fan Wink Cos you not gonna hear the fan stop above your revs most of the time.

Which volvo is this off of? Most of the old models had viscous fans anyway (240 / 240 T and 740) so they would, themselves require electric as aftermarket improvement.

What figures you hitting on the wheels for that motor? What rim size you running, this will affect reading drastically! I lost around 4kW according to two dyno's when I changed from 15" to 17"

The electric fan is out the window , im just going to run her as she is otherwise i will not stop there . im not sure of the kw power on the wheels but bhp on the wheels is only 66 and 130 newtons , its fine ill just deal with been down on power, tyre size im runing is 215*45*17 runing a 7inch rim if that means anything .

Sad

You mean the silver bullet be gone? This is indeed a sad day. That car was so clean you could use it as an operating theater.

Let us know how things go.

Congrats Dean, I was sad to see the beauty go the first time. Good to hear you have it back - even though its in less pristine condition compared to how you sold it.

You going boost on this one too?

Well you've already gone the FE DOHC Turbo route with the other car, so if you looking to build a small turbo 4cyl and not particular about the brand (non toyota) why not look at the SR20VE motor from Nissan. I can't recall the original motor in there but if you looking for something smaller, a little 4AGE turbo / supercharger or SR16VE might fit the bill.

Keep us posted, as always the project will be interesting Smiley

Bang for buck the 4agze and sr 20 are a little out of my price range so i think i should just go 13b turbo and run a t76 turbo just to keep things simple

Thought you wanted a turbo daily drive? 13b with a T76 in correct trim can make power early but are you sure you want to go so big? Why not T61 or T66?

Depends on goal power and your definition of streetable. Going to be exciting to follow this thread. Decided on ECU yet?

t66 curve is still not suited for the CA18, but then again don't know the exact turbo specs you have. I must pop in for a visit some time - we still haven't had that braai Grin

It's alright, stock oem turbo? or changed it.

In terms of the Celica, you have a lot to do with the maintenance and setup - don't discount your efforts ;-) A good driver needs a good pit team.
